As part of our voluntary support for a community project in Worthing... The Community House, we took some young people and their carers for a team building day.
The teenagers were preparing to travel to Ethiopia (with funds raised by themselves) to work with disadvantaged children there. The team building was a requisite part of their pre trip training. We donated a sailing day, with yacht, skipper and crew and all refreshments. Sailing from Portsmouth to Cowes and back again, each young person had hands on experience of working as a part of a sailing team. Each took the helm under sail, which helps build confidence and self belief. Their carers from Spurgeons children’s charity said that it was ‘a truly transforming experience’ for the boys.
We also donated a day’s sailing for six as a raffle prize (given away as the ‘star prize’) at a community disco in aid of fund raising for the trip. The three boys completed their trip to Ethiopia three months later.
The aim of this kind of programme is to broaden the horizons of young people, minimising the influence of inappropriate role models. All boys are now pursuing further education and still active in the community and mentoring their younger counterparts.
